PGL Launches Nonpolarizing MLD Diffraction Gratings for Directed Energy

February 23, 2023 | In the News

CARVER, Massachusetts / February 1, 2023 – Plymouth Grating Laboratory (PGL), the leading commercial manufacturer of large, high-performance diffraction gratings for lasers and laser systems, announced that it has launched a new product line for Spectral Beam Combining (SBC) of High Energy Lasers (HEL) used in Directed Energy applications.

These Multilayer Dielectric (MLD) reflection gratings achieve extremely high diffraction efficiency (typically 96 – 99%) over a broad spectral bandwidth (> 50 nm at 1055 nm) for all polarizations, making them ideal for high-power, efficient nonpolarizing fiber laser systems.

“PGL’s unique grating designs combined with our proprietary thin-film coating processes and fabrication know-how enable us to produce SBC gratings that not only exhibit extreme performance, but also are highly manufacturable for reproducible results time after time,” said PGL’s President, Turan Erdogan.

The new products utilize the same, proven MLD grating technology for pulse compression PGL has been delivering to the world’s premier ultrahigh-intensity laser facilities and OEM laser manufacturers for over 15 years.

The gratings are available in standard sizes from 50 mm round to 100 mm x 100 mm square. Custom sizes including dimensions > 150 mm are also available. The gratings can be made on a variety of substrate materials, including fused silica, ultralow-thermal expansion glasses and ceramics, and single-crystal silicon.
